NO Synthase (Nos1+) neurons in post-stroke motor recovery
Motor learning has strong significance for stroke recovery but cell type-specific responses to motor learning remain elusive.
The researchers show that M1 Nos1+ neurons expressing neuronal nitric oxide synthase are corticospinal neurons, selectively activated by and critical for motor learning.
Their activation enhances structural plasticity, oscillations, and regional CBF. Importantly, activating M1 Nos1+ neurons or using NO donors promotes stroke recovery.
