Protein biogenesis and quality control are interconnected in mitochondria

Components of the mitochondrial proteostasis network protect against proteotoxic stress caused by protein damage due to spontaneous misfolding and oxidative damage.
Recent structural and functional studies in various organisms have expanded our understanding of molecular activities and mechanisms of different components involved in proteostasis and quality control in mitochondria, both during protein biogenesis (translation machinery, import components, and chaperones) and protein degradation (disaggregases and proteases).
These studies reveal how protein biogenesis and protein quality control are mechanistically connected in mitochondria.
