Probiotic prevents autism like symptoms in a mouse model

The researchers used CHD8-haploinsufficient autism spectrum disorder (ASD) mouse model to evaluate microbiota-gut-brain axis using single-cell analysis.

They uncover how Chd8 haploinsufficiency disrupts brain and gut development, leading to autism-like behaviors. CHD8 haploinsufficiency caused delayed development of radial glial precursors and excitatory neural progenitors in the E14.5 brain, inflammation in the adult brain, immunodeficiency, and abnormal intestinal development. 

Using single-cell transcriptomics, they reveal selective CHD8 knockdown in intestinal epithelial cells exhibited normal sociability but impaired social novelty recognition that could be rescued by probiotic L. murinus.
