Visual hallucinations in Parkinson's disease: spotlight on 3 central cholinergic dysfunction

The researchers in this review explore how central cholinergic dysfunction may contribute to the multifactorial mechanisms underlying visual hallucinations in Parkinson's disease.

In addition to the cholinergic system, several other neurotransmitters have been implicated in the pathogenesis of visual hallucinations.

The authors think that the interactions between different  neuromodulatory systems may help developing a better understanding on neurobiological framework involved in the visual hallucinations.

As cholinergic degeneration likely occurs before the onset of hallucinations, the authors believe that it will be interesting to investigate whether cholinomimetic pharmacotherapies for at risk patients may mitigate the progression to psychosis and further cognitive decline.
