How glucose regulates epidermal differentiation

Glucose is the main energy source for a cell but its non-energy related roles is not clear.
The researchers show that free glucose accumulation accompanies differentiation in various cells.
They also demonstrate that free glucose itself is required for terminal differentiation in the epidermis and binds to various cellular proteins.
Glucose binds and regulates the IRF6 pro-differentiation transcription factor, mediating its dimerization, DNA binding, and target gene induction to drive differentiation.
