Structural insights into human organic anion transporters

Transport of organic anions in kidneys is carried out by organic anion transporters (OATs) of which OAT1is essential for the transport of organic anion drugs and metabolites, while OAT4 facilitates absorption processes in the kidney and placenta.

The researchers determined human OAT1 structures in the apo state and bound to probenecid, adefovir, cefazolin, and PAH, revealing a planar ligand-binding mode.

Distinctly, the OAT4-DHEAS structure displays a perpendicular ligand-binding mode.
