Role of mitochondria in cellular signaling

Mitochondria previously thought to be only provider of energy source for the cells is also involved in various signaling pathways necessary for  essential for cellular homeostasis.

Mitochondria can sense, integrate, and respond to a wide variety of cellular cues and also can fuse and divide, pinch off vesicles, and support inter-organellar communication in addition to regulating fluxes across the inner and outer mitochondrial membranes.

Mitochondria contain danger signals for the cells and may undergo membrane damage if not regulated by quality control mechanisms.

Recent evidence indicate that mitochondria may respond to cellular damage and promote effective immune responses.

The researchers in this review provide an overview of various aspects of mitochondrial function as they provide regulate  cellular signaling mechanisms.
