Controlling sympathetic neuron-satellite glia interactions
Sympathetic neurons contain neuronal cell bodies and satellite glial cells (SGCs) but how these neuron-glia interactions are established remains unclear.
The researchers describe a contact mediated mechanism triggered by retrograde NGF signaling, which underlies sympathetic neuron-satellite glia interactions in sympathetic ganglia during development.
The authors demonstrate that neuronal expression of a transmembrane protein, Delta/Notch-like EGF-related receptor (DNER), and DNER deletion disrupts neuron-SGC contacts and results in aberrant neuronal morphology.
Specifically, they show that neuron-satellite glia contacts established during development are necessary for regulating neuronal morphology, metabolic signaling, neuronal activity, and sympathetic output to peripheral organs/tissues.
