Preventing tooth damage!

The researchers explore the function of trigeminal sensory neurons innervating the inner tooth—herein, intradental neurons.

They determine these specialized cells respond to damage of the enamel and initiate both pain and a jaw-opening reflex.

They report myelinated high-threshold mechano-nociceptors (intradental HTMRs) in tooth protection using various techniques.

Activation of intradental HTMRs using chemogenic techniques caused  pain phenotype marked by facial and postural changes and transient optogenetic activation triggers a rapid, jaw-opening reflex via contraction of the digastric muscle,

This study shifts our perspective of tooth innervation from pain producing to protective.
